8:00 PM - 9:00 PMon ZoomJoin Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester's Social Justice Committee, alongside members of Temple Israel of Northern Westchester and the Religious Action Center of New York, to learn more about the proposed "Less is More" legislation, advocating for change in New York's parole system.
This past summer many of us gained a new awareness of systematic racism in our country. New York State is no exception. In New York State, parole officers can and do re-incarcerate people for missing an appointment because of work or child care needs, staying out beyond a curfew, or testing positive for alcohol after their release from prison. New York State re-incarcerates more people for minor transgressions like these – known as “technical” or “supervision” violations - than any state in our country except Illinois. Black people are incarcerated for these minor offenses almost 5 times the rate of white people.
