The Path of the Mourner: Resources for Congregants Upon the Loss of a Loved One

The passing of a relative or friend is understandably fraught with sadness and sorrow.  Judaism offers a path in the form of rituals and structure for the mourner to follow.  Please see below a series of resources for those who have recently lost a loved one:

For an overview of the mourning process, please see: https://reformjudaism.org/practice/lifecycle-and-rituals/death-mourning

You can find a short video detailing the mourning process here:  https://youtu.be/Zz0QZXMkrsg

Upon receiving news of a loved one’s passing, please begin by reaching out to our clergy team:

Rabbi Jaffe: jjaffe@bethelnw.org
Rabbi Londy: llondy@bethelnw.org
Cantor Sternlieb: esternlieb@bethelnw.org
Rabbi Linzer: mlinzer@bethelnw.org

Should the news of a loved one’s passing be received after hours, please call our emergency line: 914.238.3928

Next, we suggest you contact a funeral home.  We most often work with and highly recommend the following choices.  The location of the funeral home does not matter as they will provide services for interment and mourning throughout the greater NY area:

Beecher Flooks Funeral Home
Bill Flooks proprietor
418 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville, NY 10570
914-769-0001
info@beecherflooksfh.com

Riverside Memorial Jewish Chapel
100 Saw Mill River Rd
Hawthorne, NY 10532
Riverside Memorial Jewish Chapel website
914-664-6800

Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, Inc.
630 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, NY 10024
plaza@plazajewish.org
212-769-4400

Should you need to purchase a funeral plot, we suggest utilizing Sharon Gardens:

Sharon Gardens Cemetery
273 Lakeview Avenue
Valhalla, NY 10595
1-888-KENSICO (536-7426)

Our clergy will be available throughout the process to guide you.  Once the funeral details are set, we will send a notice to our congregation, should you wish.  We will also notify members of our synagogue’s Caring Community, who will be in touch to offer support in setting up and providing items for shiva.

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact our clergy at any time.  We will provide whatever support may be helpful in your time of need.  Ultimately, we will ensure that you and your family are able to mourn and celebrate the life of your loved one in a meaningful way.

In addition to our congregational clergy and staff; support groups, counseling and resources for those in mourning are offered by:
