11:00 AM - 12:00 PMon Zoom

Our annual Soup’er Bowl program will look a little different this year, however the soup will still go a long way to help others in need.

-Make your dry soup kit at home (ingredients & instructions are below) and/or
-Click here to join us on Zoom on Sunday, February 7 at 11:00 am, where we will make our soup kits together and play a bit of Super Bowl Trivia (you don’t have to be a sports fan to play!)

Drop off your dry soup containers at the temple any time between Sunday, February 7 and Wednesday, February 10.  Bins will be outside the temple’s front doors. Other donations needed are cans or boxes of soup or broth (kosher preferred).

All donations will be going to the Bronx Jewish Community Center.

No donation is too big or too small! We welcome any number of soup kits you create.

Use a 32 oz. jar or plastic container.  Feel free to decorate if you like.  The Tikkun Olam Committee will be adding labels with soup instructions.

Split Pea Lentil Soup (from the Washington Post)

Ingredients:
1 cup dried green split peas
1 cup dried red lentils
2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
1 tablespoon garlic powder (granulated garlic)
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1 bay leaf

Directions to make the jar or container:

  • To build the jar, pour 1/2 cup of the split peas into a quart-size mason jar or deli container, arranging them in an even layer. Carefully add 1/2 cup of the red lentils, creating an even second layer. Repeat so you have a total of 4 alternating layers.
  • Carefully add the onion flakes, garlic powder, cumin, dried basil, dried marjoram, celery seed and bay leaf to create a top layer. Seal well.

*Notes:

  • The Tikkun Olam Committee will label your jar or container with the ingredient list, instructions and a note from Beth El.
  • You are welcome to decorate the containers with a special message on the top.
  • If you would like to put the spices in a sachet, rather than just on top, you can do so, but is not necessary.

Directions to make the soup (should you want to try some at home):
Pour the contents of the jar into a large pot. Add 6 cups low-sodium vegetable broth; bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium, cover and cook for about 1 hour, stirring a few times and adjusting the heat as needed, until the split peas are tender.  Taste and season generously with salt and pepper. Discard the bay leaf before serving or storing.
