Forever Families Through Adoption is proud to announce the creation of the Art Group for Adoptees, an art themed socialization group for school age adoptees. The group will focus on the expression of emotions through art, and creating an open forum for discussion about the participants’ feelings about adoption. Groups will be co-led by FFTA employees, Becca Leitman, MSW, adoption counselor, and Megan Ice, Ed.M. Adoption will be the common thread that holds the group together, and will be addressed as it is brought up by the participants.
The goals of the Art Group for Adoptees are for children to have fun participating in art related activities, to get to know peers and adults who share the experience of domestic or international adoption, to normalize these experiences and the accompanying emotions, to develop the skills and self-esteem of each adoptee, and to provide respite for adoptive parents.
The Art Group for Adoptees was created by Becca Leitman, MSW, to draw together her passion for art and her work in adoption. As an adoptee, Becca realizes the importance of having a shared experience with other adoptees and as an artist and social worker, wanted to create an environment for adoptees to have a cathartic experience through art.
FFTA’s Art Group for Adoptees will service adoptees in Westchester County and surrounding areas, and is open to those adopted by agency (private or public) or attorney assisted adoptions. Participants will fill out necessary paperwork to register, including parent/guardian written approval. All services are provided free of charge and participants are responsible for their own transportation.
